Root Canal Treatment In Newcastle

About root canal treatment

Inside your tooth is a space called the root canal system, which contains dental pulp (nerves and blood vessels). If the pulp becomes infected due to decay, injury, or damage, treatment is needed to remove the infection. You may not always feel pain in the early stages. In some cases, a tooth may darken in colour, which can indicate that the nerve has died or is dying.

Why is root canal treatment needed?

If an infection inside a tooth is left untreated, it can spread through the root canal system and into the surrounding tissues. Without treatment, the infection will not clear on its own and the tooth may eventually need to be removed. Root canal treatment removes the infection and helps preserve your natural tooth.

What does the treatment involve?

Root canal treatment is usually carried out over one or two appointments.

During treatment:

  • The area is numbed with local anaesthetic
  • A protective sheet (dental dam) will be used to keep the tooth clean and dry
  • The infected pulp is removed
  • The root canals are cleaned
  • The tooth is sealed with a permanent filling
  • If the tooth is badly worn or at risk of further damage, your dentist may recommend a crown to protect and strengthen it

I have been a patient at this practice for many years and have always been impressed by the helpful staff and professionalism of all concerned. Over recent times I have been looked after by Mark Trueman who has been so welcoming and reassuring. He always finds time to ask about my health and life, making the whole experience a very positive one. His reassuring manner helps me to relax, and any necessary dental work is carried out with the minimum of fuss, whilst informing me of what is taking place as the treatment is proceeding. Thank you Mark, and all the team at Capel Dental Care Surgery.

Fantastic atmosphere. I have a huge phobia of dentists and apart from an emergency at another dentist, I hadn't been for 40 years. The staff were very friendly and I felt at ease, the dentist explained everything in detail and I would recommend this dentist and the practice highly to anyone looking for a dentist .
